Five top tips to keep your property secure

Published on 07.03.2017 by

As we head into a new season it’s time to start thinking about the warmer weather on the horizon.

This is great news for our morale, but sometimes leaves us more vulnerable to burglary and break-ins. As we throw open our windows and start that spring clean it’s also a good time to remind ourselves about home security. So, here are a few top tips to keep you and your property safe and secure.

CLOSE (AND LOCK) THE WINDOWS

Many burglaries are the result of entry through unlocked patio doors or a window. It’s so easy to forget to lock the windows when we go out, particularly if it’s just to pop down to the shops – after all, you’ll be back in five minutes. Even at night time leaving a window ajar while you sleep, can be an invitation to burglars. Lock it, don’t lose it.

USING DETERRENTS

Alarms and CCTV are great deterrents. By ensuring your property has an alarm, you’re putting burglars off from the start. The same applies to having a dog. No burglar wants to have to deal with a barking defender, even a little dog can make a difference. It’s just one more thing a potential burglar needs to consider when planning entry. So, if your house has Scrappy Do shouting the street down when somebody approaches or a Hadley Wood Security plaque, they’ll probably go elsewhere.

AVOID A PILE-UP

Don’t let post pile up if you are away on holiday. This is a tell-tale sign that your home is empty. Why not ask a neighbour to check in every couple of days and put your mail out of site. You can do the same for them and not only does this give you that extra bit of protection, it’s a great way to get to know who’s next door.

Steer clear of social media updates

If you are away from home, it can be tempting to post your every move on social media sites. Particularly when you are sunning yourself in the Maldives, while friends and family are ploughing through the drizzle on the school run. However, this sort of information can inadvertently be telling the world that nobody’s home. Keep quiet and enjoy the peace a holiday should offer.
